Description
At the museum, visitors are assisted by staff and where required our museum education officer will guide visitors around the exhibits. These cover: Local history about the inhabitants of the area from the hunter gatherers early Zulu settlement; colonial farmers and the start of the Village on the uMngeni a concentration camp during The South African War 1899 - 1902 industry, harnessing hydro electric power from the Falls to run a rubber processing factory; agriculture, and village life western medicines and instruments from the local doctor`s surgery and Indigenous medicinal knowledge as practiced by traditional healers; home life in Victorian times and a view into an informal settlement.
The museum has a reference library and archive which is accessible to researchers by appointment. Research is done in response to requests and enquiries from many different sectors school children investigating local history and heritage, requests from the general public for information on buildings, background research for land claims, cultural and social research about farms, research for and by descendants of early settlers.

Directions: The Howick Museum is located adjacent to the Howick Falls, a proclaimed natural Heritage site in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands.
It is 25km north of Pietermaritzburg on the N3, in the centre of the Midlands Meander, a highly popular Arts and Crafts route.
