In 1872, the first small efforts were made towards the formation of an art collection in Cape Town. Like the SA Museum, which began life in 2 rooms above a booksellers shop, the collections first home was 2 back rooms at the SA Museum. Following gifts and bequests, the collection gradually expanded and work on the Gallery building began in 1928. Today the Gallery is South Africas premier art museum, containing works from all relevant schools and periods, from both Europe and Africa, and providing for the serious study and appreciation of art in SA. Constantly changing exhibitions, representing a diversity of artists and style, have prompted critics to praise the Gallery`s array of great shows.
