Come and visit the Chavonnes Battery Museum.

The Chavonnes Cannon Battery museum at the Waterfront is Cape Town’s best kept secret buried treasure simply known as the Chavonnes Museum, it was built by Governor Maurice Pasque, the Marquis de Chavonnes, and completed in 1726. It is the oldest coastal gun battery at the Cape, and the oldest fortification besides the Castle of Good Hope.

Step below sea-level and stand on the original shoreline of Cape Town. Experience the history of Cape Town presented in English / Afrikaans and Xhosa. The story of the people who walked along this shoreline, the San and Khoina, the explorers and adventurers, slaves and settlers. The men and women who gave birth to our nation. Find out why the Cape was so important for Ships on the Spice and Slave trade route.

Displayed in the museum are various permanent exhibits, some in display-cases and others stand-alone. The displays are interactive and wherever possible, visitors are able to touch the ancient cannon, accurate replicas of equipment and the walls of the fort itself. A unique and fun experience for all.
