Description
Johannesburg`s major history museum. The permanent displays focus on urban life in Johannesburg since the discovery of gold, with themes such as mining and domestic labour, shack life and township jazz. Mahatma Gandhi’s role in the fledgling city is covered, as is the historic 1956 Treason Trial when Mandela was jailed in The Fort.
Other displays deal with early man, stone and iron age communities, and the first white settlers in the Johannesburg area. Watch the press for details on temporary exhibitions.
