Description

Johannesburg`s major history museum. The permanent displays focus on urban life in Johannesburg since the discovery of gold, with themes such as mining and domestic labour, shack life and township jazz. Mahatma Gandhi’s role in the fledgling city is covered, as is the historic 1956 Treason Trial when Mandela was jailed in The Fort.

Other displays deal with early man, stone and iron age communities, and the first white settlers in the Johannesburg area. Watch the press for details on temporary exhibitions.

Also in Museum Africa:
The Museum of South African Rock Art showcases unique rock paintings and engravings. The role of rock art in Bushman social and religious life is explained in a reconstructed rock shelter.

The Bensusan Museum of Photography and Library has important items from the
beginnings of photography in 1839 to modern developments.

The Photo Gallery has changing photo exhibitions, and the large photo library covers all aspects of photography.
